The many friends of Sister M. J. C* Kay, Sister A. Graham, and Sister J* Gordon, of the Chalet Hospital, will ba interested to learn that they nave accepted positions in Johannesburg and will be attached to Dr Campbell Begg.’s 200-bed private hospital. For many years Sister Kay was attached to the Dunedin Public Hospital as theatre sister, and later at Stafford Hospital* Sister Graham had her training in the Southland Hospital, and Sister Gordon at Waikato Hospital. They will leave Dunedin on Monday next by the first express to join the Awatea on the first stage of their journey. His Honour Mr Justice Kennedy left to-day to attend a sitting of the Court of Appeal at Wellington. Dr J. R. Elder and Mr J. T. Paul were passengers by the express this morning, being bound fpr Wellington to attend a meeting of the National Historical Committee in connection with, the Centennial celebrations.
Mr James Begg left by the express to-day on his way to Wellington. Dr Gqwland, professor of anatomy at Otago University, left m-day for Hammer.
_ Mr S. Ritchie (Conciliation Commissioner) was a passenger for Christchurch by the express to-day. Mr G. S. Kirby returned yesterday, by car after a visit to Hanmer. A Press Association cablegram from London states that Wing-commander C. R, Carr, of New Zealand, has been promoted group-captain. Sergeant M'Carthy, who will replace the late Sergeant Boulton in the North Dunedin district, was welcomed at the Central Police Station this morning. Sergeant M'Carthy was stationed m Dunedin for a number of years, but latterly has been in charge of the New Brighton police district. Upon hia transfer back to Dunedin he was tendered a farewell by a lepresentativo gathering of residents, the mayor of the borough (Mr E. L. Smith) speaking in eulogistic terms of Sergeant M‘Carthy’s worth.
Mr H. B. Duckworth, of Christ* church, was elected president of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation at the annual conference of the federation at Wellington yesterday. Tributes were paid to the work of the retiring president, Mr J. T. Spears, of Wellington. Mr D. Henry, of Auckland, was elected vice-president, and Mr J, Abel, of Wellington, treasurer.
