BOARD'S MONTHLY MEETING The Harbour Board held its monthly meeting last night, there being present the chairman (Mr W. Begg), .Messrs J. W. Munro, M.P., H. Dundan, J. Preston. A. Smith, R. Walls, F. .E,Tyson, D. F. H. Sharpe, T. Scollay, and J. It. Waters. The bank return showed a net balance of £11,866 Os sd. It was reported that the receipts for October were £12,774, as against £11.429 in 1937-38, £10,129 in 1930-37, and .£10,554 in 1931-32. The expenditure was £17,410, a? against £14,609 in 1937-38, £13,708 in 1936-37, and £11,835 in 1935-36. SHIPPING MOVEMENTS. The harbour master (Captain •J. Mac Lean) stated that during the month of October 23 coastal vessels, 4 intercolonial, and 5 overseas (of a total tonnage of 42,686 tons) arrived at Dunedin, and 9 coastal, 1 intercolonial, and 4 overseas (27,501 tons) at Port Chalmers. The departures from Dunedin were 23 coastal, 4 intercolonial, 4 overseas, and 1 warship (46,147 tons), and from Port Chalmem 9 coastal, 3 overseas (20,005 tons). The tug Dunedin steamed 238 miles during the month. RAMPS ON WHARVES, The Standing Committee recommended for approval the report submitted by the engineer and harbour master with respect to the widening of two ramps at Victoria wharf, at an estimated cost of £2OO, in order to facilitate the movement of jankers - with long lengths of material from the wharf deck to the roadway, and, noted the fact that the proposed design of “Tajshed provided for two doors_ of sufficient width and height to give clearance for handling long girders to and from the shed. The report was approved. , . OVERHAUL OF DREDGE. • In view of the fact that insufficiency of labour at the present time would not permit of any tenders being received for the annual overhaul of dredge Otakou, and consequent on the necessity of the dredge being overhauled before commencing the proposed second shift immediately after the Christmas holidays, the Standing Committee reported that it had approved of the overhaul work being carried out by the board’s staff, augmented by labour from local firms, and recommended that any matters in connection with siich overhaul work be left in the hands of the chairman, the secretary, and. the engineer to deal with as occasion arises. The report was adopted* CiTY BOUNDARIES. " The Standing Committee reported that it had approved of the communication to the City Council and West Harbour Borough Council inviting representatives of these bodies to a conference in connection with the area Tat Black Jack’s Point, and noted a reply from the town clerk agreeing to such, conference, and recommended that the chairman, deputy-chairman, and Mr A. Campbell should be appointed the board’s delegates. The report was adopted. ANNUAL SUPPLIES. The following tenders were accepted: —The Vacuum Oil Company, for supplies of motor spirit for the pilot and! lightkeeper’s launches, the balance of the year’s supplies to be equally divided among the Shell Company, the Texas Company, and the Associated Motorists’ Company. The tender of the Shell Company for fuel for firing under boilers, and the tender of the Vacuum Company for fuel oil for internal combustion engines were accepted. It was decided that consequent on the seven tenders received for building timber being the same, no contract be entered into, but that thp portion of the board’s requirements for native timbers purchased from local firms be divided among the seven tenderers subject to the price being the same as in the original tender, and, so far as imported timbers were concerned, that these timbers be obtained on quotation from firms holding stocks to the board’s requirements. YACHTING CONTESTS. The board'decided to contribute £lO 10s to the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association towards the expenses of the Sanders and Cornwell Cup contests, HARBOUR WORK. In his report for the month the engineer (Mr M‘G. Wilkie) detailed tho activities of the dredges, and also referred to the, work being carried out in the Leith Canal, at the wharves, and throughout the harbour, GENERAL. It was decided to contribute £3 3a to the funds of the Y.M.C.A. Mr Begg was appointed the board’s representative on the local Advisory Committee of the South Islands Travel Association.
