“LEARN TO SWIM”

OTAGO CENTRE’S CAMPAIGN ARRANGEMENTS COMPLETED Final arrangements for next week’s “ Learn to Swim ” campaign were made at last night’s meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, and it was decided that a meeting of all instructors be held to-night to complete the coaching plan to be followed. Those present were the president (Mr W. A. Jenkins), in the chair, Messrs S. Brown, D. Watson, B. Kerr, G. H. Peat, C. J. Leeden, A. R. Baker. W. Warren, F. Marrett, J. Hill, J. Robert, D. Pickard, W. S. M'Ewan, G. L. Rutherford, and E. C. Isaacs (hon. secretary) . The Secretary reported that business firms and schools had been circularised concerning the “ Learn to Swim ” campaign, and, with the co-operation promised by the clubs and the instructors, the effort should be one of the most successful yet. Messrs W. A. Jenkins, S. Brown, D. Watson, and B. F. Simonsen. were appointed to supervise the instruction and allocation of learners to groups during the week. It was also reported that a uniform plan of coaching be followed, and copies of the lessons be supplied to pupils desiring them.

The secretary of the Middlomarch Amateur Swimming Club (Mr G. S. Gillespie) wrote stating that the baths there were being opened on December 3, and it was desired that the centre should be represented and that swimming demonstrations be arranged.—lt was decided to accede to the request, and the Tours Committee was empowered to arrange the visit. The Lawrence Club was granted permission to hold its 11 Learn to Swim campaign next week, and the educational officer (Mr D. C. Bannatyne) was authorised to supervise the effort. It was reported that Mr Bannatyne would visit Milton to conduct the Toko. Club’s “ Learn to Swim ” campaign from December 5 to December 17, and that Mr H. L. Isaacs would conduct the Balclutha Club’s effort from December 5 to December 10.

February 18 was approved as the date for the Lawrence Club’s annual carnival, but it was decided to advise the -club that the date_ coincided with the final day of the national championships at Invercargill. The Tours Committee was appointed to make a selection of swimmers for the Balclutha Club’s carnival on December 10. - The Balclutha Club, having affiliated \vitb the New Zealand Surf Life Saving Association, was granted permission to alter its name to the Balclutha Amateur Swimming and Surf Life Saving Clis. It was decided to forward a letter of appreciation to Mr D. C. Bannatyne for the services he had rendered to water polo over a long period of years. It was also resolved to forward a letter of thanks to Mr W. H. Bucklano for his gift of referee and goal-scoring flags for the water polo competition. It was resolved to ask the New Zealand Council for a ruling as to whether a junior swimmer may compete in a provincial intermediate championship without losing his or her status as a junior.

It was decided to award the cup given by the Moeraki Centenary Committee to the winner of this year’s Otago mile championship.

A club rooms committee was appointed as follows: —Messrs G. H. Peat, B. F. Simsonsen, A. R. Baker, and C. J. Leeden.

A letter was received from the Kaikorai Club complimenting the Water Polo Match Committee on the work it was doing to foster the game, and expressing its appreciation of the efforts of the chairman of the committee, Mr Don Watson, in so successfully organising the water polo night. Miss B. Stewart was granted a transfer from Zenith to Kiwi, and A. E. Deuchrass from Zenith to St. Clair, subject to compliance with the transfer rule, the transfers taking effect from November, 1939. Reporting on the Kiwi carnival, the local officer (Mr D. Watson) said it was evident now that with the increased entries received for all events programmes would have to be curtailed, and the chairman directed the attention of all delegates to this aspect.
