The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Remuera, which left Auckland on November 2, sailed from Colon on Wednesday for London, where she is due on December 8. GERMAN PORTS BUSIER. According to the official statistics, 58,116 vessels aggregating 45.988,000 tons net arrived at or left German ports during the first half of tho current year, against 52,844 of 41,931,000 tons iiet in the corresponding period of 1937. The increase in tonnage, amounting to 9.7 per cent., was mainly due to”an expansion of trade from overseas countries, which rose by 2,833,000 tons, or 8.4 per cent., while shipping between German ports expanded by 1,224,000 tons, or 15.3 per cent. About 85 percent. of the 'total was accounted for by the three North Sea ports; Hamburg recording a rise of 12.6 per cent., Bremen 28.8 per cent., and Emden 23 per cent. The Baltic ports, with the exception of Kiel, registered only moderate improvements. GLENBANK FROM JAVA. Tho Bank Line motor ship Gleubank is expected to reach Auckland from Java on Monday with a full cargo of raw sugar for discharge at Chelsea. WAIPORI CLEARS BALBOA. Cabled advice has been received by the Union Company that its new steamer Waipori, en route from Rotterdam to Auckland, Wellington, Bluff, and Dunedin, cleared Balboa last Saturday. She is due at Auckland ou December 14. SMART MAIDEN TRIP. Twenty-eight days out from Liverpool, the new Shaw Savill motor ship Waimarama arrived at Auckland at 2.45 p.m. on Tuesday, after a smart maiden passage from the United Kingdom. She brings cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin, and is due hero on December 8. » KARETU FROM HOBART. Two freighters, which have been regular traders to AustraHia for some years, have recently changed hands The Swedish steamer Skagern, of 5,842 tons gross, owned by the Transatlantic S.S. Company, lias been sold to another Swedish company. The vessel was built in 1917. Owned by Hogarth and Sous, Glasgow, the steamer Baron Murray, of 3,103 tons gross, has been sold to a Chilean company and renamed the Quinenco. The vessel was built at Glasgow in 1924. SCRAP METAL. TENNESSEE TO LOAD FOR JAPAN. The Wilhehnsen motor ship Tennessee, which recently arrived at Avonmouth from Port Pirie, will, after discharge, proceed to one of the Atlantic ports to load about 7,500 to 8,000 tons of scrap metal for Japan. The Nordvard and Ann Stathatou had also been fixed for the same business, but one of these vessels has the option to load at California. The fixing of more vessels to load scrap metal at U.S. Atlantic ports for Japan at slightly higher rates than recently ruling, was the principal development last month in the British freight market. Line’s motor ship Melbourne Maru, which arrived at Sydney on November 17 from Japan, brought considerable cargo for New Zealand ports. Neill and Co. have been advised that this will bo transhipped without delay. OLDEST VESSEL. The recent sale of the two-masted schooner Germain brought notice to the fact that she is the oldest vessel on the British register. The Germain was built of local timber and teak at Grand Port, Mauritius, in 1837, and for many vears was owned by Le Vallou Sugar Estate Company Ltd., who employed her in carrying sugar from Mahebourg to Port Louis, but since the enactment of legislation prohibiting the transport of this commodity, except by the Government Railways, she has been laid up. She is of 40 tons register, with a length of 61ft Gin, beam of loft lOin, and depth of Cft 3in.
