A REPERTORY COMEDY

■ THE un CHRISTOPHER BEAR When the Dunedin Repertory Society embarks on the lighter aspect of the stage the result is invariably agreeable. Such is the case with the latest success, the three-act piece, ‘The Late Christopher Bean.’ There is no doubt that from the-aspect of merit of presentation this play does not rank among the society’s greater triumphs. Perhaps the reason is attributable to tho policy of the society to introduce as many of its members as possible to major works-: There was another big audience at His Majesty’s Theatre last night, and it was one that was very pleased with the humour of the play and also its delineation. That there are nine players in the cast who are making their how in a public performance is an indication of the value the society places on encouraging the talents and enthusiasm of its members to the full. Airs Elsie Stephens scores with her version of the Welsh servant Gwenny, which is a model of character acting. Then there are very commendable performances by Air H. H. Westwood as Dr Haggctt. and by Air Ernest Fish as Air Rosen. His is a most amusing role, and he makes the most of it. The doctor’s wife is competently played by Airs Alina Anderson, and the parts of the daughters of the doctor are taken by Airs Ronald Jones and Airs Dessa Anderson. Alinor roles are taken by Alessrs Ken Donaldson, John Hayward, and D. S. Chisholm. The play, produced by Aliss Ngaio Alarsh, will be performed to-night and to-morrow night.
