PEACE EFFORTS
MESSAGE TO MR CHAMBERLAIN ROMAN CATHOLIC HIERARCHY'S ' GRATITUDE (British Official Wireless.) Press Association—By Tc.egraph—Copyright RUGBY, October'27. (Received October 28, at 11 a.m.) After a meeting of the Roman Catholic Hierarchy in England and Wales the following message was telegraphed to Mr Chamberlain: “The Catholic archbishops and bishops offer their heartfelt gratitude to Mr Chamberlain for his successful efforts in the cause of peace, and promise their loyalty and prayers.” ARCHBISHOP OF YORK VIEWS ON REARMAMENT. RUGBY, October 27. (Received October 28, at 11 a.m.) The Archbishop of York, in a diocesan letter, urged that the country must deliberately organise for peace. He believed that the Government was right to press forward rearmament. “ There is a case for total disarmament,” he said. “I do not think it a convincing one, but it exists. There is not a case at all for insufficient armament. If we do not all turn pacifist, which would be an honourable but I think a mistaken course—and, anyhow, it is clear that the nation is not going to adopt it—we must try to see that our armament is sufficient for the defence of our Empire and—which is morally more important—our share in the maintenance of international law,”
