ALAN LOVEDAY

GIVEN USE Of STAINER VIOLIN SIR PERCY AND LADY SARGOOD'S GESTURE One of the most pleasing of the many expressions of appreciation of the genius and promise of the boy violinist, Alan Loveday, was demonstrated this morning at the residence of Sir Percy Sargood, when the young musician was handed a very old and valuable violin for his use. The instrument is a Jacob Stainer. Present at the time were Sir Percy and Lady Sargood, Mrs Loveday, and Mr Alfred Walmsley and Mr W. R. Sinclair, the two last-named being trustees of the Alan Loveday Fund. Sir Percy, in handing the instrument and an accompanying letter to Alan, spoke of the pleasure it gave him and Lady Sargood to do so. The letter read:— To Master Alan Loveday. In handing to you this violin, which belonged to our late son, we do so in the hope and belief that it may help you in your study of music, especially making your violin work easier and most enjoyable, until you become a great violin player. We only lend it to you in trust for just so long as you find it useful and suitable to you. If, therefore, at any time you lose interest in it we do not want you to sell it, but to return it, through your trustees, to us, so that some other aspiring player may also have a chance of using it. We wish you every success in life, and feel sure that you will grow up a strong, kindly little gentleman. With our love, We remain, (Signed) P. S. Sargood. Lucy C. Sargood. From Sir Percy and Lady Sargood, “ Marinoto,” Dunedin, N.Z. A letter was also handed to the trustees, advising them of the terms of the loan. Alan quickly showed his apppreciatiou of the kindly act and his recognition of the qualities of the instrument.
