DRUNKEN MOTORISTS
IMPRISONMENT AT WEEK-ENDS FIR SEMPLE’S PROPOSAL [Special to thb ' Stak.’] WELLINGTON, October 28. Imprisonment at the week-ends of drunken motorists is a possibility of the future, the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Transport, stated to-day. He will ask Cabinet to approve of legislation on these lines. “ Obviously something more must be done,” he continued, “ because instead of the number of convictions _ going down they are going up, despite all efforts to get these people in charge of high-powered cars to avoid drink. They are potential murderers, and if we gaoled them in the ordinary way their families would suffer through loss of salary or wages; but a series of weekend terms would punish only the guilty. This has been tried in some American States, and the psychological effect has been good.”
