Black to play and win. 1-6, 18-15, 32-28, 31-27, 28-32, 27-24, 32-27, 24-20, 27-23, 20-16, 23-18, 15-11, 18-9, 11-2, 9-5. Black wins. DOMINION TOURNEY GAMES. This pair of games was played at the tourney held at Invercargill last Easter between R. Weir (last year’s champion) and C. Souness, both of Dunedin. GAME 710. —“ Kelso.”—

‘-Southland Times ’ Notes. (a) Strongest reply to 10-15. (b) Best. (c) 22-18 first is more often adopted. 25-21 is a good alternative. (d) 16-19 is also good. (e) ‘ Master Play ’ gives 26-22 as best, but text is quite sound. The remainder of the game is all published play and of no special interest. GAME 711. —“ Kelso.”—

(a) Varies from preceding game. Not quite so powerful perhaps, but sound. Gisberg against Fcrrie in the last interna, tional went 25-21, and got an excellent game, which he eventually won. Text appears to give Black the advantage. (b) The position now is one of exceptional interest and the play very fine, but Black has all the edge. (c) An ingenious effort to got out of a difficulty which may have been successful but for falling into the trap later. (d) Getting into position to spring the trap. (e) Which White falls into. GAME 7'-2. This game was played recently on the Big Board at Vancouver, and is from the Vancouver ‘ Sun.’ —“ Paisley.”— Black, E. Wylie; White. T. Pashos.

(a) The position is now into a Glasgow, colours reversed, with Black a movi advanced from the regular game. (b) Loses; while playing X considered it good enough, overlooking the effect of 28-24 after the two-for-one shot, instead of 7-10, as played; 20-24, 27-20, 18-23 makes for an easy draw. (c) When 7-10 was made at note (b) it proved to be fatal. Black having no chance to recuperate and draw. While the win is not brilliant, nevertheless it is the first one scored against me in almost 400 games played over a period of two years on the Big Board in Stanley Park. —Game and notes by E. Wylie. PERSONAL. The draughts editor being on holiday, no correspondence will be answered during the next two or three weeks, although the column will be published each week.
