TRANSFER OF THOROUGHBRED

FALSE RECEIPT CHARGE FARMER ACQUITTED [Per United Press Association.] HAMILTON, October 28. Hearing of a case concerning the transfer of the thoroughbred mare Miss Beauty and the registration of her foal was concluded in the Supreme Court at Hamilton. The charges preferred against Charles Shaw (55), a farmer, of Tauwhare, were that on May 31, 1936, at Ngaruawahia, he procured Tutahi Rakatau to forge a receipt for the sale of the horse, purporting to be signed by C. Hinton, knowing it was false, with intent that it be acted on as genuine. He was further charged that, on February 28, 1938, he caused E. H. O’Meara, secretary of the Waikato Racing Club, to act on the receipt as though genuine. Mr Justice Blair presided. After a retirement of a little over four hours the jury returned a verdict of not guilty on the second count, and the forman stated that the jury were unable to agree with respect to the first count. At the judge’s suggestion they retired again, and after a period of 10 minutes returned a verdict of not guilty on the first count.
