CONQUERING EVEREST
THE WEATHER PROBLEM SMALL EXPEDITION EVERY YEAR SUGGESTED Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, July 3. (Received July 4, at 1.5 p.m.) A succession of yearly expeditions to Everest is wanted, writes Mr Tilman, from Rongbuk base camp in a copyright message to ‘ The Times.’ Summing up the results, he points out that there was Seemingly no lull in 1938 between the winter winds and the first heavy snowfall owing to the early monsoon, “ while last year,” he says, “ we were told that the situation was exceptionally favourable. Moreover, we saw in 1935 the mountain climbable to the end of June. Now we know that a small expedition can do what is necessary, such a succession of attempts would become a possibility. I believe probably a smaller party than the present should come out every May. A favourable season will occur sooner or later. We have the mountaineers capable of taking advantage of it;”
