POWER INTERRUPTION

ta LIGHTNING STRIKES LINES AUCKLAND TRAMS HELD UP [Pee United Peess Association.] AUCKLAND, July 2. Lightning storms in Taranaki thia afternoon were responsible for a breakdown in the 110,000-volt transmission line between Arapuni and- Stratford. There were two slight interruptions in the Auckland lighting circuit and a 30-minute dislocation of the tramway system in the city and suburbs. Broadcasting services were stopped for five minutes, once at 2.17 p.m. for three minutes, and again at 3.36 p.m. for two minutes and a-nalf. Inquiries made at Hamilton, showed that lightning, which struck the hightension lines between Arapuni and Stratford, ■ caused a surge that placed the circuit out of commission, yiterfered momentarily with the equipment at the Penrose sub-station, and resulted in the shutting-down of the direct-cur-rent generators at the King’s wharf sub-station, which supplies elecfcrio power for the tramway system and the industrial load in the city.
