LONDON’S BALLOON BARRAGE SCHEME.—It is hoped to recruit 5,000 volunteers in London for the balloon barrage air defence scheme, which will be organised in squadrons with 40 to 50 balloons to each unit. Each balloon will have a winch tender with a trailer for hydrogen cylinders. On the tender is a drum containing thousands of feet of wire cable. The balloon is attached to the cable and then inflated. It is raised by an auxiliary engine to the required altitude. A balloon is here being filled with hydrogen from the cylinders oh the ground at the school at Cardington. About 500 balloons will be used for London, the plan to be later extended to other cities and vulnerable targets in the provinces.
