ANGLO-ITALIAN AGREEMENT
NO LOAN COMMITMENTS (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, June 20. (Received June 21, at noon.) Mr Butler, in answer to Mr Noel Baker, who asked if the Prime Minister could not say when the accent AngloItalian agreement would bo brought into force, declared that both the British and the Italian Governments were anxious for the agreement to be brought into full force as early as possible. The conditions by which the entry into force of the treaty were governed had been publicly and repeatedly stated, and he had nothing to add to what had alreay been said. Asked for an assurance in connection with the Anglo-Italian negotiations that the British Government did not contemplate authorising any form of financial assistance, credit, or guarantee to the Italian Government or Italian merchants for the purchase of wheat, Mr Butler said the question of credits in any form was not raised by either side in the negotiations which led to the agreement of April 16,, and no, other negotiations with Italy on that subject were contemplated by the British 'Government,
SPANISH QUESTION INTERLOCKED DEFINITE PEACE MOVE BY POWERS. LONDON, June 20. (Received June 21, at 1 p.m.) The Australian Associated Press says that for the first time since the commencement of the Spanish conflict a definite plan is being discussed for mediation by outside Powers for early cessation of hostilities. There have been swift moves in the last few r hours between European Powers as a sequel to Signor Mussolini’s approach to Mr Chamberlain in connection with the implementation of the Anglo-Italian agreement. Prospects are better than for a considerable time. The ‘ Daily Telegraph’s ’ Rome correspondent says Lord Perth called on Count Ciano, the outcome of the conversation being a mutual desire for the creation of favourable conditions whereby Britain would implement the Anglo-Italian agreement.
