[Fiscal Oue Oamabo Correspondent.] WESLEY~CHURCH. The seventy-fifth anniversary festivities of Wesley Church, Oamaru, were concluded with a sot tea and, later, a concert. The Rev. IV. B. Pickering extended a hearty welcome to the mayor and mayoress (Mr and Mrs K. Familton) and to tho Rev. J. M. M’Kenzie. A telegram of congratulation was received from the Rev. J. F. Jack. Mr M’Kenzie was the speaker for the evening. He said Methodism was founded on a living gospel and personal experience. He paid a tribute to the lay preachers, without whom Wesley could never have accomplished his task. The rank and file must help to carry on the task. Ministers, singlehanded, could not do it. An anthem was sung by the choir, andl Mrs Familton, Miss W. Slater, and Mr Langley sang solos. The ladies who presided at the tea tables were Mesdames M’Donald, Ingram, Chase, Tweed, Wylie, Fagan, Knight, H. L. Familton, and Fryer, assisted by the Young Women’s Bible Class. In a Rugby ■ football match at Georgetown tho home side heat Otekaike by 19 points to 9. For Georgetown, Geddes, Ledingham, Winchester, and E. Strachan scored tries, Watson converting two, and Morrison kicked a penalty goal. For Otekaike, Ross scored twice and Gardl kicked a penalty goal. CUSTOMS RETURNS. The Oamaru Customs _ returns for last month, compared with those tor May, 1937. are ns follows Customs revenue, £1,937 4s 8d (£I,BOO 11s 4d); sales tax, £312 16s 9d (£340 13s 8d); petrol tax, £2,018 19s (£1,582 13s) ; marine revenue, £142 17s Id (£33 lbs Id) > miscellaneous, £24 2s 9d (£3 7s) ; total, £4,336 Os 3d (£3,766 Is Id). Miss M. Lambie gave a resume of the year’s work, and Miss V. Smith thanked all who luid helped, especially Mrs W. J. Davies and Miss N. Ihomeon. who trained the children for the concert. . ~ Up’to the end of May, motor cars registered at- the Oamaru Chief Post Office totalled 1,402, or 107 more than were registered up to the same time last year. Also, 323 trucks and 168 other motor vehicles were registered, the over-all increase being about lib. Last month there were 166 hours 45 minutes of bright sunshine recorded bv Mr D. S. Bain in Oamaru. as against 117 hours in May last year It was the sunniest May for over 1U years, tho previous best in that period having been 144 hours. H^ ero was only one sunless day, May 28. OAMARU SAVAGE CLUB. The first korero for the season of tho Oamaru Savage Club attracted a big attendance. Great Chief M. L. Thyne was installed by Ex-Great Chief E. M'Diarmidl. A party of Waimate Savages took part in the excellent programme, which comprised selections by the orchestra, songs by Palefaces Monteath and J. M Lean and Savages W. Renton and Leonaid, recitation by Savage E. F. Armstrong, a lecture on Robert Burns by the Re . R C Rennie, a piano-accordion solo by Paleface A. F. Crump, and stones by Scalphunter Lauder (Waimate). MAGISTRATE’S COURT. At the Oamaru Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., gave judgment by default for plaintiff in the civil claim, Jaraes M. Scott v. F. B. Kelk (Christchurch), £7 0s Cd, costs £1 14s 6d.
