INDUSTRY'S VULNERABLE POINT CONTROL OF SOURCES OF SUPPLY ESSENTIAL. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, May 12. (Received May 13, at 8 a.m.) Bowaters Ltd. have agreed to_ purchase the Cornerbrook paper -mills in Newfoundland, as a step to safeguard the British newsprint industry, which was threatened with a shortage of pulp at the beginning of 1937, and which resulted in a rise in prices, accentuated by tha tactics of Scandinavian producers. British newspapers came to the assistance of Bowaters and voluntarily agreed to an increase in price. The incident showed the vulnerability of the British newsprint industry unless it controlled sources of supply, hence the present deal.
