CLAY BIRD SHOOTING

SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS The South Island clay bird shooting championship meeting was inaugurated at Green Island this morning under the auspices of the Dunedin Gun Club. The conditions were ideal when the first competitors took their places, but toward midday a light breeze came up, which made the shooting rather more difficult. The match to bo fired this morning was the £SO open handicap of 21 birds. This was won by R. Baker (Waimate), who gave a very fine performanceWith a handicap of 16yds he hit every bird, and had to use the second barrel on only; three occasions. Second money was divided between eight shooters, who each broke 20 birds. Of these L. P. Hayes (Oturehua), C. Thompson (Oamaru), and W. M‘Breen (Central Otago) used only one barrel, while D. Campbell (Balclutha) and A. N. Turner (Christchurch) used two second barrels. Three competitors broke 19 birds and the same number broke 18. The results were:— R. ißaker (Waimate, 16yds), 2i birds, 1. T. A. Clouston (Lauder, 17yds), L. P. Hayes (Oturehua, 15yds), D. Campbell (Balclutha), C. Thompson (Oamaru), A. N. Turner (Christchurch), S. F. Aburn (14yds), J. R. Roy (Palmerston, 16yds), andW. M‘Breen (Central Otago, 15yds), all 20 birds, 2. G. E. Turner (16yds), M. Anderson (14yds), and T. E. M'Kinlay (11yds), all 19 birds, 3. J. Stiven (14yds), W. Elliott (13yds), R. Bruce (14yds), all 18 birds, 4. I. G. Watkins (18yds), five birds, 5. J. Roy (12yds), six birds, 6. W. Morland retired. This afternoon the South Island clay pigeon championship was held, with 21 birds and an 18yds rise, while to-mor-row, open sweepstakes will be held in the morning and the South Island sheet championship will be fired in the afternoon.
