CONTROL OF PRESS
REBEL LEADER’S DECISION TOTALITARIAN RULE. LONDON, April 29. General Franco’s decision to control the Press in rebel Spain, as Signor Mussolini and Herr Hitler are doing in Italy and Germany is causing unfavourable comment in many quarters. It is pointed out that if General Franco is victorious the world will know littlp of the real position in Spain. If the censorship, which, under the now regulations, is applicable to all journals in General Franco’s Spain, is applied to foreign correspondents, the position will then become analogous to that in Abyssinia. _ Such a censorship, if rigorously applied, would obviously deprive the world of anv idea of the extent of any German or Italian activity in Spain. ‘ The Times ’ describes the control as “ another milestone in General Franco’s road to totalitarian rule.”
