HARBOUR COLLISION

RAKGATIRA-ACHILLES MISHAP HO FORMAL INOUIBV [Pee United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, May 9. An announcement that he did not consider it necessary to hold a formal inquiry into the collision between H.M.S. Achilles and the interisland steamer express Rangatira, which occurred in Wellington on the night of April 14, was made to-day by the Minister of Marine (Mr P. Fraser). The Minster said that from an examination of the statements taken from officers and men of the Achilles and the Rangatira at a preliminary inquiry before the Superintendent of Mercantile Marine, the facts of the case and the circumstances in which the vessels got into difficulties were quite clear, and he therefore did not consider it necessary to hold a formal inquiry. He added that various matters arising out of the mishap would be discussed with representatives of the navy and of the Wellington Harbour Board in order that the best arrangement possible might be made to minimise the risk of a similar accident in the future.
