DEGREES AND DIPLOMAS CONFERRED UNIVERSITY CEREMONY There was a large attendance in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon, when the degrees and diplomas were conferred on the graduates of the Otago University. The Chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell) presided. . As the members of the teaching staffs filed to their places on the stage they made a vivid sight in their robes-—some scarlet and others a sombre black —and the hoods of many degrees. When the Chancellor had taken his seat the Umversity Anthem ’ was sung, accompanied by the organ, played by the city organist (Dr V. E. Galway). A welcome to all was extended by the Chancellor, who said the ceremony celebrated fittingly the award of the University’s degrees and diplomas to those entitled to them. He then proceeded to present the degrees _ and diplomas awarded by the University of New Zealand and the University of Otago. The graduates were then addressed by Dr C. E. Kerens, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, on the problems of University control and administration and some of the needs.
