Mr T. Gallagher, inspector of the Dunedin signalling division of the New Zealand Railways, left this morning on a holiday visit to the north. Mr S. C. Doyle, superintendent of railway road services, has retired on superannuation after 40 years in the Railways Department. The Rt. Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland, Bishop of Wellington, although still confined to his bed, is reported to be progressing satisfactorily. The bishop suffered a severe shaking when the motor car he was driving struck a polo on the main highway near Longbum on Anzac Day. Mr E. H. Field, who is retiring from the Marine Department after over 40 years’ continuous service, was entertained at a, farewell gathering at Wellington. The secretary of the Marine Department, Mr L. B. Campbell, eulogised Mr Field’s work, and referred to the many monuments to his skill and energy erected ,on the New Zealand coasts during his employment in the lighthouse service. A ship’s clock and a barometer were presented to Mr Field from the officers of the lighthouse service, head office, and the Government lighthouse steamer Matai.
