CREW HOLD UP VESSEL

QUESTION OF SUNOAY PAY (Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 8. As a protest against the alleged action of the company, the crew of the Union Company’s coastal steamer Kaimiro refused to take her to sea on Saturday and delayed her departure from Auckland for Portland and Wellington by about 24 hours until shortly after 6 o’clock tonight. The claim was made by the men that they should have received double pay for a recent Sunday sailing from Westport. Only ordinary time was allowed, as the company held that, as Westport was a bar harbour from which movements cannot always be kept to schedule, the rate for Sunday departures was provided in the award. ' A meeting of the crew on Saturday resulted in a decision being reached to register a protest by refusing to sail until 6 p.m. to-day. This decision was communicated to Captain Gardiner, and, as it was then impossible to engage another crew, the ship was kept at the wharf until the time fixed by the crew was reached.
