The’ Foreign Office Spokesman has chosen the' moment of Japan’s new drive on Shantung to deny the .Chinese claims of sensational victories in North China. He said Japan liad undertaken .the difficult task of clearing the enemy from a widespread area in ■which unfavourable situations had inevitably developed, but Japan’s faith was' unshaken in the eventual attainment of her objectives. ' ITALIAN JOURNALIST ARRESTED PEKING, April 20. (Received April 21, at 10 a.m.) An Italian journalist, Signor Barzini, who is on the staff of the ‘ Corriere Della Sera,’ and who was aboard the Panay when she sunk, has been arrested by Japanese frontier guards at Kupeikow. He was returning after a visit with a party of tourists to Jehol, where he was returned and placed in prison. No reason was given. (Che British United Press says that the authorities considered that he was taking too many photographs. RELEASE GRANTED ‘ PEKING, April 20. (Received April 21, at 1.45 p.m.) The journalist, Barzini, has been released. It is understood hat be was arrested on a charge, of photographing military barracks and other forbidden subjects.
