RESTLESS AUSTRIAN NAZIS
PARADE BANNED AT GRAZ POLICE AND TROOPS GUARD STREETS Press Association—By Telegrapn—Copyright LONDON, February 28. _ A serious situation has developed in Graz owing to Nazis announcing a monster parade of 60,000 for yesterday for the purpose of _ demonstrating “ against Communism in the Fatherland Front,” says the Vienna correspondent of the ‘ Daily Telegraph.’ Tho authorities banned the parade, but the Nazis refused to recognise the prohibition. The Government, fearing that the police would be unable ho hold the demonstrators, concentrated strong parties of troops at Graz and installed field guns and machine guns in the main streets, and maintained patrols with bombers and armoured cars, resulting in the Nazis calling off tho march. The day passed quietly, and the troops were withdrawn in the afternoon.
Tho Nazis deny that they intended a putsch, but the Nazis throughout Austria received the leaders’ instructions to demand full political equality under Dr Inquart as Fuhrer inside the Fatherland Front, in which they form separate groups in defiance of Government arrangements. The Nazis have adopted the slogan. “ We fight for a free and independent Nazi German Austria.” Meanwhile, they are challenging all Dr Schuschnigg’s declarations. NAZI PREDOMINANCE IN STYRIA LONDON, February 28. (Received March 1, at 12.50 p.m.) The ‘ Daily Telegraph’s ’ Graz correspondent says Styria is now an Austrian province where Government writ runs with Nazi permission. One man in seven, one schoolboy in three, and one woman in 15 openly wear forbidden Swastikas. One in 12 wears the Fatherland F'ront badge. The streets until Sunday were filled with hawkers selling Swastika badges and Herr Hitler postcards. Men and women who refused to buy were insulted. Stationers’ windows are crammed with pictures of Nazi demonstrations which were not reported in the Vienna papers. Schools are closed in order to prevent Nazi teachers propagandising the children.
