THE PIONEERS’ PART
MASS OF REMEMBRANCE Dedicated to the prelates, priests, religious, and'people who have played a part in the building up of the Catholic Church in New Zealand, a Solemn Pontifical Mass of Requiem was celebrated this morning at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, opening the second day of the centenary celebrations. . This proved a most impressive occasion. Archbishop Panico presided, and the celebrant was Bishop Liston, assisted by the Very Rev. Dr Kennedv (Christchurch) and the Rev. Father M. Murphy (Whangarei) as deacons, and Father A. Wardle (of the Mill Hill Society) as sub-deacon. The Very Rev, Dr Courtney (Holy Cross College, Mosgiel) and the Rev. Father Ferrari (Sydney) were the masters of ceremony. In an eloquent tribute the Very Rev. Father D. H. Hurley, Provincial of the Society of Mary, referred to past prelates, priests, religious, and the laity, using as his theme “By their works shall ye known them.” The cathedral was packed, and again there were remarkable scenes as the procession entered and left.
