NORTH OTAGO NOTES

TRAFFIC CENSUS. A report on the traffic census taken during the week ended February 1 was tabled at the monthly meeting of the Waitaki County Council yesterday. The census was carried out at Winsley’s corner, Pukeuri Junction, Kurow, and Omarama. At Winsley’s corner the check covered 24 hours and at the other points, 16 hours each day. The traffic showed a substantial increase since the last summer census, taken in 1935, as follows; —State highways: Pukeuri North, 31.7 per cent.; Pukeuri South, 32.5;' Waiareka North, 77.8; Waiareka South, 39.9; Waia-reka-Ngapara, 40.4; Pukeuri-Kurow, 23.2; Omarama, 86.2; Omarama, Lmdis side, 37; Omarama-Benmore, 18. The tally figures were as follow; Oaniaru-Dunedin highway, at Winsley’s corner (north), 5,488, average per day, 784 (Sept., 1937, 601; Jan., 1935, ' 561) ; at Winsley’s corner (south), 8,747, average per day, I, (1937, _ 1,039.2; 1935, 703). Pukeuri Junction (south), 5,153, average per day, 736 (Sept., 1937, 596; Jan., 1935, 555.4). Pukeuri Junction (north), 3,973, daily average, 567.4 (Sept., 1937, 447.7; Jan., 1935. 431), Pukeuri-Omarama highway; At Pukeuri, 1,621. daily average 251.6 (Sept., 1937, 175.4; Jan., 1935, 188). A most successful carnival was held at the Public Baths by the Oamaru Amateur Swimming Club. Among the good performances were those of 11. O. Davies, who won the intermediate 50yds championship in the record time of 31 4-ssec, and R. M'Laren, who bettered the 100yds back stroke record by 5 2-ssec. There was a keen contest in the M'Culloch Cup 200yds medley relay, between the club team and the Waitaki Boys’ High School team, victory going to the club. The 100yds M'Culloch Cup was won by M'GregorM'Donald, of the Boys’ High School. R. M'Laren won the 50yds championship. Miss R. Woodgate won the 50yds women’s breast stroke championship, J. Martyn the 50yds junior boys’ title, and Miss M. Lindsay the women’s 50yds free style championship. OAMARU STAMP CLUB. A number of Oamaru philatelists have formed a stamp club, the officebearers being as follow: —President, Mr R. L. Banks; vice-president, Mr D. V. G. Smith; hon. secretary and treasurer, Miss V. Perry; committee— Messrs H. Benson, W. M. Uttley, W. Borrows, and the previously named officers. Mr Smith offered the free use of a room for meetings and it was left to the to draw up rules. Assistance in forming the club has been given by the Timaru Philatelic Society. LAWN TENNIS. A handicap tennis tournament at the Waianakarua courts resulted in Mrs A. P. M'Kerrow and Mr Neil Richardson being the winners of the Joyce Richardson Memorial Cups. The tournament was held in ideal weather. BOWLING. A bowline match between the Awamoa and Meadowbank ladies’ clubs resulted as follows (Awamoa names first) :—Mesdames Rusbatch, Watson, Gerrie, Kennedy 17, Mesdames R. Robertson, Sproat, Blacklock, Kilgour 11; Mesdames Watson, Hendy, Cowan, Tonkins 19, Mesdames Carson, Hannah, Patterson, Nimmo 11; Mesdames Black, Pile. Stichman, Sorley 28, Mesdames Clarke, Douglas, Skirving, A. Robertson 5. Totals: Awamoa 64, Meadowbank 27. STREET ACCIDENT. As the result of a collision between a car and a cycle at the dangerous corner of Itchen and Severn streets and Douglas terrace yesterday afternoon, James Peterson, aged 15, of 3 Greta street, was admitted to the hospital suffering from concnssion and a broken arm. WHITE BUTTERFLY. As evidence of the number of white butterflies in North Otago, the radiator of a car wlich arrived at Oamaru from the north yesterday, was blanketed by the insects. They were like a white mat on the front of the car.
