SUPERANNUATION FOR ALL
BILL BEING GRAFTED HEALTH SCHEME MAY BE DEFERRED [Pbb United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, February 24, The proposals of the Government for its national superannuation scheme are now understood to be in the hands of the law draftsman, and it can be assumed that Parliament will be called on fairly early in the session to be resumed next week to give consideration to this legislation. There is, however, a suggestion in political circles that the cognate national health proposals may not take legislative shape at so early a date. Factors which have contributed to this are understood to be, first, the extended indisposition of Dr D. G. M'Millan (Dunedin West), who has„ taken a leading part in Labour’s preliminary survey of the field; secondly, the’ fact that the Ministry adopted the procedure of devoting its energies first to the superannuation scheme. It has been evident that, in considering superannuation, the Government has been faced with a much more straightforward task. In the national health sphere New Zealand will, to a larger extent, be breaking new ground, and will face a problem of some difficulty. Coming on the eve of the session of Parliament, to be resumed nest week, the address to be delivered by the Prime Minister (Mr Savage) at Featherston on Saturday, is expected to have considerable political importance. Mr Savage will be the guest of honour at a picnic arranged by the Wairarapa branches of the Labour Party. The Prime Minister, who is looking much better, after his recent indisposition, indicated in an interview that he will take occasion to recall the conditions which _ existed when his Government came into office. He will survey the work of the past two years, and will probably devote some attention to the Government’s prospective legislation.
