HOT WEEK-END

SUNSHINE AND SURFING CALL TO THE OPEN , Exceptionally warm weather pro. vailed in Dunedin over the week-end* the temperatures on both Saturday and Sunday exceeding the 80 mark* The maximum' temperature on Saturday was 82.2, and yesterday 84. The heat attracted thousands of people out of doors, and the be ache* in particular were very well patronised* Yesterday thousands thronged Ocean' Beach, and the call of the "surf was heeded to an extent that has rarely been equalled bn any previous occasion. At St. Clair the baths proved very popular, and at times it was almost a case of “ standing room only.” The warning issued in the ‘ Star ’ on Saturday was -apparently heeded, and bathers kept to the areas marked •/f by, the flags. This was just as well, for, though there was little surf yesterday, there were many, holes, channels, ana currents in other parts of the beaches which might easily bavp caused difficulties. Though both St. Kilda, and' St.' Clpir were very well' patronised Tomahawk attracted more people than had previously been • the case. - It was estimated that 300 cars lined, the bridgo end of the beach and, more than 5,000 people visited this beach. It is very gratifying to note/ that though so many people yesterday availed themselves of the opportunity of bathing there was only one instance of a person getting into trouble. This did not occur during the most Crowded hours of the day;’ hut- mrihe _<ivbhing f when' the ’beach/sins -Almost-(deserted. A girl was observed- in St. Kilda beach, about 7 p.m. Several members of tbe r, St. Kilda Life Saving Club. answered the alarm bell, and the rescue was carried put by Mr G. Smith, one of the younger members _ of the club. After artificial respiration had been applied the 1 girl was able to proceed home.

On Saturday afternoon, however, seven people had to be aided, .and. in almost every instance the : victim got beyond the maiiked-off area. These rescues were all adroitly carried outby members of the St. Kilda Life Saving Club;

Not only the beaches, but other amenities' close to the: city were in great demand yesterday * and. hundreds of cars moved north and south of the city. Whare Flat attracted hundreds qf visitors, and many attended placet closer at hand, such as Fraser’s Gully, the reservoirs, and the Gardens.. ■ < Distant beaches, too,- were well patronised, .and jßrighton attracted * very large crowd.
