NEW ZEALAND CADETS

MILITARY TRAINING IN AUSTRALIA FOUR YEARS' COURSE [Per United Press Ass^ation.] WELLINGTON, February 11. The four secondary school cadets to be sent by the Government to train at the Royal Military College of Australia at Duntvoon to qualify for commissions in the New Zealand regular forces have been selected. The cadets, who will leave Auckland for Sydney by the Awatea on February _ 23, were announced by the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) to-day as follow: R. ■ Donaldson, educated at Karori Primary School, Wellington, and at Kihi Kihi, has been a pupil of the Te Awamutu District High School since 1934, and senior prefect since 1937. He achieved distinction in athletics, and is sergeant-major of the Senior Cadets. He is a son of Mr George Donaldson, a farmer, of Allen’s road, Kihi Kihi. G. E. L. Dawson, educated at St. Albans Primary School and the West Christchurch District High School, and, from 1930, at Rongotai College, Wellington. During 1937, his last year at Rongotai, he was deputy-head prefect, senior boxing champion, and champion rifle shot. He is a eon of Sergeantmajor L. G. Dawson, who for 25 years has been in the service of the Royal New Zealand Artillery, and is at present stationed at Fort Dorset. L. F. Brooker, educated at thefßotorua District Primary School, and, from 1931, at the Rotorua High and Grammar School. He was _ senior athletic champion in 1936, and in 1937 held the school record for the long jump, and hop, step, and jump. Ho is a son of Mr S. C. Brooker, of 6 Pererika street, Rotorua. R. G. A, Farnell, educated at the New Plymouth Boys’ High School, where he was a distinguished athlete and possessed an exceptionally fine physique. He is a son of Mr W. J. A. Farnell, 52 Waiwaka Terrace, New Plymouth, Mr Jones said that the four boys would undergo a four years’ course, of training at Duntroon. They were a fine stamp of youth, and, during their high school careers each had established a high efficiency in his respective Cadet Corps.
