UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES
FOUR-WEEKLY ANALYSIS SUBSTANTIAL REDUCTION RECORDED [Pee United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, February 10. The unemployment return for January 15, including those on the register who are for health or other reasons unfit for employment, discloses a reduction of 15,360 as against the corresponding figure for January 16, 1937. The reduction, compared with the figures for December last, is 311. Details of the position at January 15 are as follows: — Registered, but not on relief ... 1,051 On sustenance awaiting placement 4,178 On Scheme No. 5 relief 2,827 Total 8,066 On sustenance, totally unfit for employment for health _or other reasons, but being afforded relief from the Employment Promotion Fund ... 8,000 For the four-weekly period under review the expenditure from the fund under the heading of promotion of employment, as distinct from relief expenditure, is estimated at £178,415.
