DUNEDIN CHORAL SOCIETY

Music lovers will be interested in the fine programme of Christmas music to be given by the Dunedin Choral Society in the Town Hall on Wednesday, December 8. By request, a large portion of Handel’s masterpiece, ‘ The Messiah ’ will be included in the programme, and the keen members of the reorganised choir can be relied upon to repeat the undoubted success which marked the society’s earlier concerts of the present season. A well-bal-anced chorus, inspired with the confidence resulting from the society’s recent brilliant successes, should respond to the talented leadership of its conductor, Mr Alfred Walmsley. The soloists taking part in the ‘ Messiah ’ portion of the programme will be Miss Dorothy Mackay (soprano), Miss Bertha Rawlinson (contralto), Mr Roland Dunbar (tenor), and Mr J. L. Tennent (bass). The accompaniments will he played on piano and organ by Mias Mavis Macdonald and Dr V. E. Galway. Included in the selection of Christmas music to be rendered by the choir are the first Dunedin performances of Withers ‘ Rocking Hymn,’ by Vaughan Williams, and ‘ Christmas Carol.’ a delightful work specially composed for the Dunedin Choral Society by Miss Mary Martin, Mus. Bac., to the words of May Probyn. The choir is very enthusiastic about ‘ Christmas Carol,’ and the society is confident that Miss Martin’s tuneful composition will at once appeal to the audience.
