GARDENING CLUB
At the monthly meeting of the Dunedin Gardening Club Miss E. Campbell gave an instructive talk on ‘ Some Aspects of Plant Breeding.’ The speaker outlined the method of crossing and showed under what circumstances the changes came about and why the results were often unsatisfactory. Hybrids often show increased vigour, but as a rule do not breed true from seed. Many of them, however, may ho propagated b ylayers or tubers or by grafting and budding . Sometimes considerable improvement may be brought about by selecting and propagating the seed of the choicest plants. It is usually
necessary _ to repeat the selection at intervals in order to maintain the improvements and to keep the variety pure. Mr Passmore proposed a vote of thanks to Miss Campbell and thanked the members who had brought choice blooms of ranunculus, Iceland poppies, stock, and yellow gypsophila for exhibibitiou.
