SOUTHLAND’S SUCCESS

LIFE SAVING AND SWIMMING SECONDARY SCHOOLS' COMPETITION [By Hooker.] The secondary schools’ swimming relay and life-saving competitions at Oamaru last Saturday resulted in a dual victory for Southland Boys’ High School after a good contest, Otago Boys’ High School and Southland Boys’ High School B tieing for second place in the life-saving, while Otago Boys’ High School was _ second and M'Glashan College third in the relay. The life-sawing produced a very good standard of work, and there was little to choose between the teams in the land drills, all of them showing evidence of having been well instructed. Several teams, however, lost points for being too quick with their resuscitation and too slow in the promotion of circulation.

Where victory was really achieved by Southland, however, was in the time tests for the four methods of rescue, and their general showing in rescues and releases was very smart indeed.

The Otago Boys’ High School team showed general all-round smartness, and was well controlled, and as second strings Southland B also performed well.

The general bearing of all the teams was very good, though, as Mr James Stewart, a diploma holder of the London executive of the Rtyal Life Saving Society, stated, most of the boys were inclined to hold themselves too taut and tight. ' The relay was an easy win for Southland A with an average of 19sec per length, but Otago Boys’ High School and M’Glashan College had a great tussle for second place. M'Glashan has some promising swimmers, and it was pleasing to see this school represented in the competition again. Some difficulty has arisen over the dates for the life-saying and relay, and it is possible it, will be held in the first term in the future. If such is the case, there is good reason why the programme should be enlarged and a meeting held on similar lines to the athletic fixture.
