BOOKS ON SWIMMING This week the Public library is displaying books on swimming which will interest those who swim or intend learning to swim this summer. Sid. G. Hedges’s ‘ Swimming and Watermanship ’ is a profusely illustrated volume, and contains chapters on the breast stroke, crawl, back stroke, the side stroke, the trudge, and other styles of swimming. Other chapters are devoted to floating, style, life-saving, sea bathing, diving, training, and water games. Other books by the same author are 1 Book of Swimming and Diving,’ ‘ How to Swim Crawl,’ ‘ How to Teach Swim-

ruing,’ ‘ How Well Do You Swim?’ and ‘ Swim Book.’ In ‘ How to Swim Ci’awl ’ a preliminary survey of swimming methods leading to crawl is given, also advice to the non-swimmer who wishes to begin the modem way with crawl as has first stroke. Back stroke and crawl are then dealt with in. detail. ‘ The Swim Book ’ is described as “a- leisurely friendly full volume for the person who loves swimming and wants to know a good deal albout it.” It should bo invaluable to both novice and expert. He recommends ‘ How Well Do You Swim?’ to the average keen bather who has a regular dip at a regular time, for this book includes a daily programme, a number of swimming strokes and dives, a . hundred lessons, and the Hedge’s standard swimming tests. Thus the volume is intended to give the swimmer all-round ability. Of ‘ Swimming Analysed,’ by Ger--1 trude Goss, it is said: “ Professor Goss has written an excellent volume about swimming. The text is simple, concise, complete, and comprehensive. Its value k greatly enhanced by the 215 ‘ stick-men drawings,’ which clearly show every position which the author describes.” The author is assistant professor of hygiene and physical education at Smith College. This volume, as well as teaching progression in swimming, diving, and stunts from the beginning through the advanced stages, includes additional chapters on care and sanitation of the swimming pool and athlete’s foot.

‘ Swimming is Fun,’ by Sanderson Smith, gives simple detailed instructions for the beginner ac well as the advanced swimmer. It is illustrated with line drawings picturing each step in the process of learning various strokes and styles Of this book it is said: “I am usually a little ehy_of books that teach people how to swim, but this one is not only easy to read, but easy to follow, and its arrangement could scarcely be improved.” Other books are ‘ Newest Swimming,’ by Gilbert Collins; ‘ Swimming and Diving,’ by G. Barnes; ‘Art of Springboard Diving ’ and ‘ Swimming, the American Crawl,’ by J. Weissmuller.
