NORTH OTAGO SHOW

SLIGHT DE6LINE IN ENTRIES Good entries have again been received for the North Otago A. and P. Association’s annual show, which begins next Friday, although a slight decrease is shown over last year’s figures. Taking all things into consideration, this was only to be expected. The season so far experienced has been one of the driest for many years, and farmers are becoming seriously perturbed. So that it is gratifying to note that only a slight falling off in the entries is recorded. . ... One of the surprises is the increase m the sheep section, especially in the fat lamb classes. There is a drop in the cattle entered, although those that will be brought forward promise to be well up to the standard of previous shows. Messrs J. Temple and W. T. Hellewell will not be showing this year in the Friesian class, but all the other usual exhibitors have entered their stock. There is a decline all round in the classes for horses, but some very fine upstanding draughts will be shown. In this section there will be such prominent exhibitors as Messrs S. P ._ Taylor (Ashburton), A. Grant (Fairue), Brown Bros. (Kakanui), P. W. Shacklock (Awamoa), R. Dick (Weston), C. T. M'Callum (Goodwood), R. M‘Gookin (Airedale), G. P. Johnston (Alma), J. B. Mitchell (Weston), W. J. Gibson (Papakaio), and Mrs W. Thompson (Kia Ora). The entries for produce show a slight increase, due to the fact that there will be keener competition' in the honey section, in which the entries are double those of last year. However, there is a fairly substantial drop in the knitting, fancy work, and children s classes. The falling off in the number of competitors in these classes is mainly accounted for by the fact that there are not so many outside entries. Following aro the details of the entries, the figures for 1936 being shown in parentheses :— Sheep, 202 t (184) ; pies: 2 (nil); dogs and dog trials, 40 (51); Cattle, 114 (138); horses. 183 206); produce, 171 (163); knitting and fancy work, 123 (194); children’s classes, 41 (102); totals, 876 (1,042).
