SECRET ORGANISATIONS FURTHER EXPULSIONS LIKELY Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, August 9. The ‘ News Chronicle ’ says that Scotland Yard, acting under instructions from the Home Office, will concentrate on clearing up the activities of Nazi organisations which are known to be operating secretly in English cities. A record number of Germans have been admitted into England during the past two years, and some of them have been pushing Nazi propaganda. Scotland Yard has employed a “ Nazi squad ” since 1935, and has secured ample evidence to warrant Home Office action. Further expulsions may be made soon. EXPULSION OF JOURNALISTS GERMAN GOVERNMENT PAINED. BERLIN, August 9. (Received August 10, at 8 a.m.) Tho following is a semi-official statement: —“The German Government does not conceal the fact that it is greatly pained at the decision in regard to the German correspondents’ expulsion. Since Britain considers that continued residence of the correspondents is undesirable Germany naturally will take a corresponding action.” The newspapers say that “ English provocation ” can only injure AngloGerman relations. . IN RESTRAINED TERMS GERMAN PROTEST RECEIVED. LONDON, August 9. (Received August 10, at 10.15 a.m.) The German Charge d’Affaires has conveyed the German protest against the expulsion of the journalists to Lord Halifax. It is understood that it is couched in restrained terms. FIRST REPRISAL ‘TIMES’ REPRESENTATIVE TO BE REPLACED. LONDON, August 9. (Received August 10, at 1 p.m.) The ‘ Daily Telegraph’s ’ Berlin correspondent says that as a reprisal for the expulsion of three German journalists from England tho Government has requested ‘ The Times ’ to replace within a fortnight its experienced and popular chief representative, the former president of the Foreign Press Association, Mr Norman Ebbut, substituting a correspondent more acceptable to Germany. ‘ TIMES ’ ANNOUNCEMENT. LONDON, August 9. (Received August 10, at 1.45 p.m.) Tho diplomatic correspondent of ‘ The Times ’ announces that the Charge d’Affaires, Herr Woermann, in the absence of Herr von Ribbentrop, called at the Foreign Office regarding the expulsions and requested the Foreign Office to inform ‘ The Times ’ that the German Government desired Mr Ebbntt’s removal. Failing his withdrawal within a fortnight the German Government would l proceed with his expulsion.
