During naval manoeuvres in Jervis Bay 14 men of the destroyer Waterhen, while attempting to recover a torpedo, were flung into the water. One, who was unable to swim, clung to a lifebelt: and - was pursued by a shark. His mate, who was swimming nearby, detached a calcium flare from his belt, and it immediately ignited. The flare was constantly jabbed in the direction, of the shark until a launch rescued the whole party.
