HOT POOL TRAGEDY
MAORI WOMAN DEAD HUSBAND BADLY SCALDED IN RESCUING HER [Per United Press Association.] ROTORUA, August 9. Dragged from a hot pool by her husband, who was himself badly scalded in the process, Merana Konui, aged 38, a Maori woman, died in Rotorua Hospital yesterday following shock and severe scalds received when she fell backwards into a thermal pool at Ohinemutu on Saturday night. Mrs Konui, accompanied by her husband and another man, went to a hot pool commonly used by the Natives as a bath. She left the bath before the other two, and was sitting on a rock ledge a short distance away, when she suddenly appeared to fall backwards into a small and very hot pool on the other side of the rock. Braving the hot water, her husband jumped into the pool and dragged the unfortunate woman out, lifting her over the edge with the assistance of his companion before he himself collapsed. Mrs Konui was unconscious when admitted to the hospital, and died at noon the following day. Konui was also admitted to hospital, but his injuries are not so serious, and it is considered that he will recover.
