REPORTER WINS BIG HANDICAP Grand National Week was opened with the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Meeting at Addington. The weather was fine and the attendance good. BUSIEST AND INQUIRY After the Introductory Handicap a protest was lodged by R. Townley, driver of Lady Sonoma, against first position being awarded to Great Admiral, on the grounds that he paced at the finish. The stewards decided from evidence and from their own observations of the race that the protest should be dismissed. After the finish of the Advance'Handicap an inquiry was held to consider allegations of interference by C. Tasker, driver of Full Hand, with Harlequin,

driven, by J. Young. After hearing the evidence it was resolved to caution Tasker for careless driving. F. G. Holmes, driver of Graham Direct in the August Handicap, was charged under rule 310 with not driving his horse to win. When the evidence of the owner, Mr J. Westerman, and of Holmes had been heard it was decided to accept their explanation. CLERK OF COURSE SERIOUSLY INJURED The clerk of the course (Mr R. A. Ferguson) was seriously injured during the running of the last race. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries to the head. Late yesterday afternoon Mr Ferguson had recovered consciousness, but was still on the seriously ill list, A fracture of the skull is suspected. When the field had travelled two_ furlongs and a-half in the International Handicap Village Guy broke a hopple, and in drifting back through the field caused Grand Mogul to fall. Grand Mogul got up and galloped through the straight without his driver. As he was passing the Show Grounds fence. Mr Ferguson, mounted on his galloper, endeavoured to catch him. The horses collided, and Mr, Ferguson was thrown heavily to the ground. Willow Wave then became involved in the mishap, and his driver (S. A. Edwards) was thrown out. Edwards and Stewart, the driver of Grand Mogul, escaped with a shaking. Grand Mogul was not injured.
