CRYING NEEDS
TWO NEW SCHOOLS MACAMDREW ROAD AND FORBURY “ They are, educationally, crying needs in Dunedin,” said Mr James Wallace, chairman of the Education Hoard, when referring to the insistent demand for new schools to replace the existing buildings at Macandrew road and Forbury during his address at the opening of the Caversham Infant tSchooi on Saturday afternoon. . Tho improvements at Caversham were only a first instalment of the school improvements the hoard contemplated in tho south end of the city, said Mr Wallace. Macandrew Road and Forbury Schools are both on the demolition list. The board was hoping for grants this year for an intermediate school at Macandrew road and a new school at Forbury to house the standard classes. If the Government would grant the money the board would see that the work was carried out expeditiously, if not by tender, then by its own building staff. Ho mentioned that at Forbury the sun had not been seen in one room for 50 years. “ I know how keenly interested in the welfare of education are Mr Wallace and the board, and that they are anxious to have new schools at Macandrew road and Forbury,” said the Hon. F. Jones. “ Anybody who has gone through the schools will agree that it is time these buildings were done away with and new schools were erected. I believe that the Macandrew road building is on the urgent list—which, however, I have not seen—and that the Forbury School is not far behind. 1 hope the Minister of Education will be able to provide the money this year for the erection of new school buildings on both sites.”
