OAMARU ITEMS

BASKETBALL Although the weather was very unsuitable for basketball on. Saturday, J. R, M'Kenzie’s (Oamaru) had a very enjoyable game against J. RM'Kenzie’s (Timaru). Timaru opened the scoring, and soon followed with more goals. Oamaru fought well for the ball, but the visitors from Timaru were superior, and at half-time th© score was 6-1 in favour of Timaru. The local team played better m the second half, and were somewhat unlucky _in not scoring more goals, but the wind was very strong and made shooting difficult, the game ending in favour of Timaru by 13 goals to 4. Mr Malcolmson and Miss Fitzgerald were the referees. The local competition was advanced a further stage on Saturday in dull and boisterous weather, which prevented play of a spectacular nature. Waitaki Girls’ High School 1.,, as the result of the usual good combination, defeated Oamaru H. by 27-7. In. the B grade W.G.H.S. C defeated Southern 11. by 19-8. —Management Committee. — At a meeting of the Management Committee held last week Miss J. B. Wilson (president), on behalf of the sub-association, congratulated Miss Fitzgerald on her success in the recent theoretical examination for New Zealand .referees. Miss . Fitzgerald was granted permission to sit the practical examination. It was decided to commence ■ the match next Saturday between North Otago B and Otago O at 2, and the Same between North Otago A and tago (B, for the Taverner Cup, at 2.45. Miss C. F. Miller was appointed the referee for the A match and Miss M. S. Fitzgerald for the B match. Arrangements for entertaining the visitors next Saturday were left in the hands of a sub-committee. The Secretary reported that the Otago Association had consented to a fixed date each year—namely, the first Saturday in August—for the annual fixture with the sub-association. Correspondence from the Upper Waitaki Sub-association was dealt with, and accounts amounting to £2 2a were passed for payment. .—North Otago r. Upper Waitaki.— On Saturday, for the first time teams representing North Otago met teams from the Upper Waitaki Union. Two games were played, and although tho local teams won both their games, the contests were interesting. _ The high wind made goal-throwing difficult, and in this respect the visiting teams were more handicapped, as they were using unfamiliar goals. For this reason there was a much greater discrepancy between the scores than in the general play. In the B grade the score was 6-1 at half-time and 12-5 at the final whistle in favour of North Otago. Miss Austen was the referee. In the A grade game the score at half-time was 15-0, out in the second spell the Waitaki defence played very well and kept the local forwards from adding much to the score. The final score was 17-1. Miss Miller .was the referee. After the games tho teams were entertained at afternoon _ tea and the North Otago Sub-association welcomed its first branch association.
