AN EASY WICKET
DUMHN6 BOWLS WELL ESSEX S6OAES 256 NEW ZEALAND'S GOOD START (From the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association with the New Zealand team.) CHELMSFORD, August 7, Another “ Saturday toss ” condemned the tourists to-day to field in sweltering heat and gave Essex the advantage of an easy wicket in the pretty ground at Chlemsford. Cowie and Dunning reappeared and bowled for long periods without apparent distress. Their physical fitness is evidently unimpaired by the recent enforced idleness. Essex made a fine start, the second century being raised with only one wicket down. Page dissolved a productive partnership, and Cowie and Dunning, using the second new ball, dismissed the next tour quickly, five wickets falling for 29 runs, including Nichols, a member of Gilligan’s team. Dunning had a fine spell after tea, taking three wickets for 3 runs, including two with successive balls. The Essex innings, which once promised a very high score, finished abruptly, with a moderate total, considering the excellence of the wicket, the easiness of which made more praiseworthy the effectiveness of Cowie and Dunning. New Zealand batted only an hour, Vivian giving a remarkable display, hitting eight 4’s, two 6’s, and only four singles. His first 50 was made in half an hour. The sixers were both out of the ground. The 5,000 spectators were warmly appreciative. Hadlee’s steady innings looked almost slow by comparison. Details:— ESSEX/ First Innings. MATCHES IN AUSTRALIA VICTORIA'S OBJECTION MELBOURNE, August 8. It is reported, that the Victorian Cricket Association is likely to decline to participate in the New Zealand team’s Australian tour, objecting to overplaying its first class matches, in -which case the financial results would be seriously prejudiced. In the event of Victoria withdrawing, Queensland will be asked to make up the third match. THIRD TEST ENGLAND'S TEAM LONDON, August 8.
