UNEMPLOYMENT

SOUTH DUKEDIH ASSOCIATION The South Dunedin Unemployed As* sociation held its fortnightly meeting in the association’s hall, Glasgow; street, on Wednesday evening. The chair was occupied by the president (Mr A. L. Lind), and there was a large attendance of members. Among the correspondence received was a letter from the Hon. Mark Fagan on behalf of the' Minister for Labour, also letters from the town, clerk, the secretary of the New Zealand Labour Party (Otago branch) Debating Club, and the secretary of the N.U.W.M. In respect to_ the lastmentioned communication it was decided to take no action in the matter as proposed by the local branch of the N.U.W.M. - The General Secretary reported than one case of distress had been assisted by the Vigilance Committee during the past fortnight. The report of the Children’s Cheer Committee submitted by Mr Petrie showed that the special fund was now in a, very healthy condition. -. : It was decided to accept the chaw lenge of the New Zealand Labour Partv to a debate, the subject beingt “ The Labour Party’s policy cannot* solve the unemployment problem.” Mr Lind reported for the deputation! which waited ‘on the placement officer respecting the conducting of the select tion ballot. It was decided to communicate with the mayor and the see* retary of the Mayor’s Relief Commit* tee asking that direct representation! on the Relief Committee be granted to the association. Messrs Lawless and Lind were appointed as a deputation td wait on the Minister for Pensions (Hon. F. Jones) regarding certain adjustments to widows’ pensions. It was decided to submit the namei of eight members as prospective members of the Utopia Club in the name of the association. It was decided' that in future new; members will be admitted by nomination only, such admissions to be approved by the general meetings. On the recommendation of the Concert Committee it was decided to proceed with the necessary arrangements for ,the holding of a free social for tha , members and their wives during tha present month. A notice of motion tabled by a member and dealing with a proposal to extend the activities of the association will come up for discussion at the next meeting, as will also a further proposal to conduct open-air public adb dresses.
