CEYLON BUS RIVALRY
SEASON TICKET HOLDERS' GIFTS in an effort to outdo its competitors a bus company in Ceylon advertises a garden party and a Christmas tree for season ticket holders and their families. This is an instance of ‘‘ uuhridk’d competition ” on the roads of Ceylon described in the report of The special commission appointed by the Colonial •Secretary to examine the transport system of that country. The commission concludes that central control of road transport is essential. Competition between bus companies is sueh that all the vehicles arc driven at tremendous speed in the effort to .snatch passengers. Many buses are dilapidated and have tyres worn down to the canvas. Drivers arc employed at the wheel for 10 hours at a stretch. Fares of all kinds arc cut to absurdly low figures which scarcely cover day-to-day exjienses. Hire purchase allows anyone to go into business who can raise enough money to pay the first instalment and the license duty, with a little over for the first day's wages, petrol, ami oil.
