The aftermath of the depression years, when many ships wore laid up and scrapped, is being felt at present with the restricted cargo space offering for the transport of produce. Only three or four years ago many ships from Great Britain were coining out to the Dominion via Cape Horn in ballast, and often left on the return voyage with small cargoes. To-day ibe opposite is the case, and vessels arrive not only with holds full to capacity but many of them also with large dock cargoes (states an Auckland exchange). On Sunday the New Zealand Star is scheduled to arrive at Wellington with a record inward cargo for that port of over 11,000 tons, and it will be interesting to compare her draught with that of the new motor ship Essex, which constituted a record for a merchant ship when she arrived at Auckland drawing 33ft 7in at the stern. The respective weights of the cargoes of the two vessels in relation to cubic capacity must be taken into consideration, as the cargo of the New Zealand Star is of a comparatively low ratio in that regard. NORTHUMBERLAND DISCHARGING. The Northumberland berthed this morning at Port Chalmers to put out W 7 cst of England cargo. The balance of her freight is for Picton. While crossing the, Pacific from Panama the Northumberland stood by the City of Shanghai for four hours while that vessel completed repairs to a fractured propeller shaft. FOR THE BREAKERS? TANKER NDCULA’S FATE. r l he Admiralty tanker Nucula may soon ho sold for breaking up. Although no official information is available at present, it was stated on the conclusion of her last voyage from San Pedro on June 10 that she had ended her service (states an Auckland exchange). Since that date she has been swinging at anchor in the Auckland stream, and has not yet discharged her cargo of oil Biel. For a tanker the Nucula has scon very lengthy service, as she was built by Armstrong, Whitworth and Company Limited, in 1906, and formerly bore the names Snyo Marti and llcimione.
