FUNDS FOR SPAIN.

TO THU EDITOR. Sir, —“ R.C.” speaks opportunely at a time when tho Pope lias recognised Franco tho rebel, although one finds it difficult to see his objection to sending medical assistance to tho Spanish Government, particularly as 93 per cent, of the Spanish people belong to tho Roman . Catholic religion. However, to speak of the Communist tendencies of the Spanish Medical Aid Committee is surely a mistake or a misstatement. Included among tho committees—not only in Dunedin, but the four centres, Gisborne, Palmerston North, Oamaru, and Invercargill—arc doctors, Labour Party members, ministers, members or Parliament, university lecturers and students, social workers, and, of course, an odd Communist or two. To speak of such people as Communists is nothing short of a libel,- and can only be for one purpose, to brand tho whole movement

as unsavoury. As to the usefulness of the appeal, any one witli the imagination of a carraway seed can visualise the situation and the need. Rather than writing inane, stupid, and misleading letters to the paper “ R.C.” would be better occupied by either helping in keeping quiet, or preferably by familiarising himself with a few facts leading up to tho present situation in Spain.—l am, etc., August 5. 'Presbyterian. [Tho reported recognition, bv ■ the Vatican of General Franco’s Government has since been officially denied,— Ed. E.S.]
