SOUTH OTAGO NOTES
[From Our Balclutha Correspondent.] August 3. WOMEN’S HOCKEY. The following team has been selected to represent South Otago in tho match against Northern Southland at Milton on Saturday:—Misses V. Balikio (Waitahuna), J. Wethev (Milton) Z. Morris (Bruce). J. Morris (Milton), A. Duncan (Stirling), R. Newbigging (Milton), E. M'Donald K. Heads, L. Vidal, M. Murdoch (Milton), D. Fairbairn, and J. Duncan (Stirling). INQUEST. An inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Robert James Simpson, aged 18 years, who died suddenly at Balclutha on Sunday, was opened yesterday before Mr A. E. Russell, district coroner. The father ol deceased, Mr A. T. N. Simpson, gave evidence of identification. He stated that deceased bad been residing at home for the past two months, having come home from Oamaru, where he had been working, with a poisoned finger, for which ho had been receiving treatment at Balclutha Hospital. On Saturday morning deceased and a friend _ left with witness to attend the Ranfnrly Shield game in Dunedin. On arrival there the young men left him, and they later met about 8 p.m., when they returned to Balclutha. Deceased did not appear to be very well, and on arrival home went to bod. He nip of tea. but later asked for adrin..’ and Mrs Simpson grave him a drink of mineral water. He did not complain
of any pain. Witness looked in to see him before retiring, and his son said “ Good-night, dad,” as ho left the room. About 8 a.m. deceased was m a sound sleep. Later when his sister looked in to see him she thought something was wrong and called witness, who found his son in a fit. He called Dr Radcliffe, but death took place while the doctor was there. His son had always enjoyed good health, except for the poisoned finger. He did not know what he had been eating or drinking while in Dunedin. Constable Boyle asked that_ the inquest be adjourned sine die, in order that an analysis could he made of the contents of deceased’s stomach, and the request was granted. SCHOOL FOOTBALL. 'flie South ’Otago High School and Otago Boys’ High School second ntteens tried conclusions at Balelutha this afternoon, the former winning by 12 points to 4. The game was not as bright as usually seen in school football, the forwards doing most of the work. The Otago hoys did not handle at all well, while the South Otago forwards played a great game.' In the first spell Allan scored for South Otago, tairing a beautiful pass with one hand and beating all opposition. There was no further score at half-time. In the second spell South Otago rushed play to Otago’s line, where the former were awarded a free kick, and Parr goaled. 6-0. Shortly after the South Otago forwards again rattled the opposition, md Donaldson secured and scored. !)-0. Otago now attacked for_ a time, and Cameron “ potted ” a nice field goal. 9-4. ■ A strong South Otago attack followed, but Otago regained ground, and loose, scrambling play took place. South Otago forwards attacked, and in a meleo on the Otago line Stewart scored. 12-4. Play was fairly even for a time. Otago attacked, only to be driven back, and towards the” end South Otago were pressing. Timo went with play about halfway. Mr C. Clark refereed. BASKETBALL. In the basketball match between Otago Girls’ High and South Otago High the visitors won bv 17 points to 12. •>
