Reports from overseas state that nearly 400 British merchant ships have been adopted by British schools since the foundation of tho British Ship Adoption Society over 12 months ago. The scheme, which aims at the education of the children, particularly as regards the geography, industries and peoples of foreign lands, has proved most successful. In operation a school adopts a vessel, preferably a tramp steamer, which visits strange ports, and on each voyage the officers of the vessel send regular letters telling of the voyage, the cargo, and the ports visited. At the conclusion of a round voyage the officers visit the school and give a short lecture on the voyage, and usually present curios or specimens from the countries visited to the school museum. By this moans the scholars become conversant not only with foreign lands, but also take a keen interest in the mercantile marine. It is interesting to note that several schools in Victoria have also adopted vessels under a similar scheme (says an exchange), but to date no definite organisation exists for the extension of similar facilities fo,r all schools. Representatives of leading overseas shipping lines stated that they would be willing to co-operate with the education authorities with a view to founding an Australian Ship Adoption Society, and it was anticipated that all ship masters visiting Australia would readily assist in this matter.
