WAKARI IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY

The monthly meeting of the Wakari Improvement Society was held on Monday evening, the chairman presiding over a record attendance of members. Tho chairman of the Tramways Committee (Cr Batchelor) and the tramways manager (Mr MKenzie) _ were present in response to an invitation to attend the meeting to discuss matters in connection with the bus, their presence being welcomed by the chairman. The Secretary put forward a number of suggestions for discussion which might put the bus on a payable basis. The proposed building scheme for tho district and the forming of a hy-pass road from County road to Kaikorai Valley road were strong points in its favour. The formation of this road would enable the bus to travel to the Roslyn cable tram terminus and so eliminate the long run to tho junction. Cr (Batchelor, in Replying, stated that the loss incurred was considerable owing to the fact that it was only an experimental bus. Touching on the proposed building scheme and the bypass road, he remarked that the former was yet to he accomplished and that the latter scheme was impracticable in the meantime owing to lack of finance, but ho assured the meeting that the proposals put forward would he completely gone into by Mr M‘Kenzio and himself. If there was any improvement in the patronage of the bus, residents of the district could be assured .that it would become a permanency. A workers’ bus in the mornings and a picture bus in the evenings was also mentioned,, but Mr M'Kenzie stated that the success of the bus depended on continuous running, it being impracticable to run special buses at busy times owing to a shortage of buses and drivers. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the visitors when they left the meeting. The Secretary read correspondence received from the district telegraph engineer, stating that a telephone cabinet would be erected at the corner of Taieri road and Dean street in the near future.

The secretary Had written to the Director of Housing requesting that a suitable piece of land be set aside for recreation purposes. The town clerk was also written to pointing out tho necessity for screenings on the footway in Upper Lynn street. It was decided to write to the telegraph engineer pointing out the frequent breakdown of the slot telephone at the Kaikorai tram terminus, and also to the town clerk drawing his attention to the bank on the edge of tho footway in the vicinity of the Nurses’ Homo in Taieri road.
