TEST MATCH AT LORD’S

NEW ZEALAND’S GREAT RECOVERY STUBBORN EIGHTH WICKET STAND MOLONEY AND ROBERTS SAVE FOLLOW ON WALLACE AGAIN BRILLIANT (From the special correspondent of tho United Press Association with tho New Zealand cricket team.) LONDON, Juno 28. (Received June 29, at 10 a.m.) A dashig display by Wallace, a courageous knock by Kerr, a patient innings by Hadlee, and a great stand for the eighth wicket by Moloney and Roberts were the highlights of New Zealand’s innings against bowling seldom better than steady, apart from Cover’s hostility with the new ball and Robins’s effective spinners. New Zealand quickly dismissed the last three English batsmen. Voce, receiving the second delivery of tho new ball, was caught when he snicked one to Tindill. Verity was well taken in the slips, and Paynter was caught when he skied a ball in forcing the pace. Cowio and Roberts appropriately returned almost equally creditable figures. A BAD START. Now Zealand experienced an. unfortunate hour and a-half before lunch. Vivian was beaten by the pace off the pitch when Cover sent down an exceptionally fast ball. Then when Kerr and Hadlee appeared to be settling down the former was injured through pulling a bumper from Hammond into his face, necessitating his retircent. Pago was shaping well when ho swept a slow ball round behind square leg, and it was safely held. New Zealand’s trail of misfortune lengthened, a rising ball ballooning into the hands of the fieldsman off the shoulder of tho bat and dismissing the steadfast Hadlee. The adjournment was taken, with three out for 60, and the game was very much in favour of the home side. POSITION RETRIEVED. Kerr returned after lunch and set resolutely about the difficult task of retrieving the position with Wallace. The latter was venturesome and vigorous, completely dominating the attack. Ho played a brilliant innings, scoring six 4’s and two 6’s—one to long on off Verity and tho other to square leg off Parks. England employed its full battery of bowlers with quick changes. ANOTHER SETBACK, The tourists lost ground after tho fourth-wicket partnership had been broken, Donnelly became the third leg before victim of the innings. Kerr, after batting with great patience for over two horirs, was caught at the wicket when ho snicked one on the leg side. Tindill, when apparently comfortable, touched a sharply-turning ball to first slip. DETERMINED BATTING. With seven out and the century still needed to save following on, Moloney and Roberts batted with grand determination, safely playing through a dangerous period of the second new ball and scoring steadily from then on. Moloney, always giving tho appearance of being unconcerned, picked up ones and twos with occasional fours to long on until he was caught. An adjournment was then taken to allow the players to be presented to the King. Moloney held the fort for nearly three hours, and hit four 4’s. His innings was invaluable to his side.

Roberts was vigorous, especially when facing the slow bowlers. He reached 50 in 80 minutes, and hit six 4’s, three 2’s, and two 3’s. The partnership yielded 104 runs and saved the follow-on. The New Zealanders’ popularity with Londoners, despite their non-success in the provinces, was illustrated by the fact that 15,500 paid for admission. Although the aggregate score was disappointing considering tho quality of the wicket and tho attack, great praise is due to the later batsmen for their determined recovery after an unimpressive start. The day’s play again illustrated tho importance of a successful opening. Details:— ENGLAND. First Innings.
